COURSE CURRICULUM

The Genetics major is structured across three levels, providing students with a progressive understanding of molecular biology, inheritance, and genome science. At Level 1, students complete core foundational units including Introductory Cellular Biochemistry, Frontiers in Biology, Science, Society and Data Analysis, and Molecular Biology of the Cell, which introduce essential biological concepts, cellular processes, and scientific thinking skills. Bridging units in mathematics or chemistry may also be required for students who need additional preparation. At Level 2, students focus on core genetics content through Molecular Genetics and Principles of Inheritance, where they learn how genetic information is transmitted, expressed, and regulated in living organisms. At Level 3, students are encouraged to take a full set of advanced genetics units to gain a broad understanding of the discipline. These include Phenotype to Genotype, Evolutionary Processes, Evolution and Development, and Genomics, which explore how genes influence traits, how species evolve, and how large-scale genetic data is analysed. Across all levels, the course integrates theoretical learning with scientific reasoning and data analysis, preparing students for advanced study and research. Overall, the major equips students with strong analytical, laboratory, and problem-solving skills for careers in genetics, biomedical science, biotechnology, and related biological and medical fields.
