COURSE CURRICULUM

The Botany major is structured across three levels, combining biological science, ecology, and plant-focused studies to build a strong understanding of plant life and ecosystems. At Level 1, students complete core units including BIOL1130 Frontiers in Biology, BIOL1131 Plant and Animal Biology, SCIE1104 Science, Society and Data Analysis, and SCOM1101 Communicating Science, which provide a broad foundation in biological concepts, scientific thinking, and communication skills. Bridging units such as MATH1720 Mathematics Fundamentals, MATH1721 Mathematics Foundations: Methods, and SCIE1500 Analytical Methods for Scientists are available for students who need additional preparation in mathematics or scientific analysis. At Level 2, students focus more specifically on plant and environmental sciences through ENVT2250 Ecology, GENE2250 Principles of Inheritance, PLNT2201 Plants in Action, and PLNT2204 Plant Diversity and Evolution, which explore ecosystems, genetics, and plant adaptation and diversity. At Level 3, students undertake advanced studies in BIOL3364 Evolutionary Processes, ENVT3363 Ecological Processes, PLNT3301 Plant Physiological Ecology, and PLNT3306 Australian Vegetation, developing deeper expertise in plant function, evolution, and ecological systems. Overall, the course integrates theory, practical learning, and environmental understanding, preparing students for careers in conservation, ecology, environmental management, agriculture, and biodiversity research.
