COURSE CURRICULUM

The Environmental Geography and Planning course is structured across three levels to build knowledge and skills in urban design, environmental systems, and sustainable planning practices. In Level 1, students complete core introductory units including GEOG1104 Disasters! (6 points), which examines natural and human-induced hazards and their impacts, and URBD1000 Introduction to Urban Design (6 points), which introduces the principles of designing urban spaces. In Level 2, students study core units such as GEOG2202 Reading Landscapes: People and Processes (6 points), which explores how human activities shape environments, and LACH2050 Plants and Landscape Systems (6 points), which focuses on the role of vegetation in landscape planning. Students also choose one option unit from GEOG2201 Geographic Information Systems (6 points), GEOG2206 Population Change: Debates and Controversies (6 points), or ANTH2225 Human Futures: Energy, Food and Sustainable Environments (6 points), allowing them to broaden their understanding of environmental and social systems. In Level 3, students undertake advanced core study through GEOG3303 Environmental Policy and Planning (6 points), GEOG3308 Climate Change: Policy and Practice (6 points), and LACH3003 Design through Landscape Management (6 points), focusing on policy, sustainability, and practical design solutions. This structure develops strong analytical, spatial, and design skills for careers in planning and environmental management.
