COURSE CURRICULUM

The course structure for this Extended Major is designed to progressively build students’ knowledge and skills in biomedical sciences and podiatric practice, preparing them for entry into the Doctor of Podiatric Medicine program. Students who have not completed Chemistry or Mathematics prerequisites are required to take foundational units such as CHEM1003 Introductory Chemistry and MATH1720 Mathematics Fundamentals in their first year. At Level 1, students study core units including Form and Function, The Facts of Life, Cell Survival and Communication, and Health and Society, which introduce essential concepts in human biology, health sciences, and the social context of healthcare. At Level 2, the focus shifts to more advanced biomedical topics such as Body Defences, Blood and Drugs, Medical Sciences Research Methodologies, and Human Development and Genetics, providing a deeper understanding of human physiology, disease processes, pharmacology, and research methods. Level 3 is dedicated to podiatry-specific training and professional development, with core units covering professionalism in practice, body systems, clinical podiatric practice, anatomy and cutaneous science, biomechanics, pharmacotherapeutics, and research and evidence-based practice. These units combine theoretical knowledge with hands-on clinical learning in simulated and practical environments. Overall, the course integrates biomedical science, clinical training, and professional skills to prepare students for advanced study and future careers as qualified podiatrists.
