COURSE CURRICULUM

The Medical Science Extended Major is structured to provide a strong foundation in biomedical sciences, followed by specialised study in a chosen discipline. In the first year, students are required to complete foundational science and mathematics support units if they do not meet prerequisite requirements, including CHEM1003 Introductory Chemistry for those without ATAR Chemistry and MATH1720 Mathematics Fundamentals for those without ATAR Mathematics Applications or equivalent. These units ensure students develop the essential background knowledge needed for advanced biomedical study. After the first year, students progress into a structured program consisting of Level 2 and Level 3 units aligned with their chosen specialisation. Specialisation options include Anatomy and Reproductive Biology, Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Exercise as Medicine, Genetics, Human Biology, Human Genomics, Microbiology and Immunology, Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, Pharmacology and Toxicology, and Physiology. Each specialisation is designed to develop in-depth knowledge of specific biomedical fields, combining theoretical learning with laboratory and research-based experience. Students typically build upon core biomedical concepts in Level 2 before advancing to more complex and specialised topics in Level 3, where they apply their knowledge to real-world biological and medical problems. Some specialisations, such as Aboriginal Health and Wellbeing, have limited availability or are being phased out for new enrolments. Overall, the structure ensures a progressive learning pathway from foundational sciences to advanced biomedical expertise.
