COURSE CURRICULUM

The Physiology major within the Bachelor of Biomedical Science at The University of Western Australia is structured to provide a comprehensive understanding of how the human body functions from the cellular level to whole-body systems, along with the scientific principles behind health and disease. In Level 1, students begin with foundational learning through Physiology – How Your Body Works, supported by optional units such as Human Biology I: Becoming Human, Human Biology II: Being Human, Frontiers in Biology, and Molecular Biology of the Cell, which introduce key concepts in human biology, cellular processes, and molecular science. Bridging units in mathematics, chemistry, and analytical methods are included where needed to ensure students have the necessary background for advanced study. In Level 2, students progress to core subjects including Cellular Physiology and Exercise Physiology, which explore how cells function and how the body responds to physical activity. In Level 3, the program becomes highly specialised with units such as Experimental Physiology, Clinical Physiology, Nutritional and Metabolic Physiology, and Extreme Environmental Physiology, focusing on real-world applications and medical relevance. Overall, the program develops strong analytical, laboratory, and problem-solving skills, preparing graduates for careers in biomedical research, healthcare, pharmaceuticals, and further study in medicine and allied health fields.
