COURSE CURRICULUM

The Philosophy major within the Bachelor of Arts at The University of Western Australia is structured to develop students’ critical reasoning, ethical understanding, and ability to engage with complex philosophical ideas across historical and modern contexts. In Level 1, students are introduced to core concepts through foundational units such as Ethics for the Digital Age, Introduction to Critical Thinking, and God, Mind and Knowledge, which help build skills in logical reasoning, argument analysis, and ethical reflection. In Level 2, students expand their knowledge by studying diverse areas including Bioethics, Logic, Philosophy of Mind, Philosophy of Religion, Knowledge and Justification of Belief, and Machine Minds and Superintelligence, along with topics in political ideas and environmental justice, allowing them to connect philosophy with real-world issues such as science, society, and artificial intelligence. In Level 3, students engage with advanced philosophical themes including Metaphysics, Aesthetics, Moral Theory, Philosophy of Language, Continental Philosophy, Philosophy East and West, Rationality and Society, and Contemporary Political Theory. This progression encourages deep analytical thinking, structured argumentation, and independent intellectual inquiry. Overall, the program prepares graduates for careers that require strong reasoning, communication, and analytical skills, such as law, public policy, education, journalism, research, and roles in government or international organizations, while also fostering a lifelong ability to think critically about fundamental questions of human existence and society.
