COURSE CURRICULUM

The Music Theatre major within the Bachelor of Arts at The University of Western Australia is structured to progressively develop students’ performance abilities, musical understanding, and professional skills in the field of musical theatre. In Level 1, students build foundational knowledge through core units such as Music Theatre: Oklahoma! to Hamilton and Music Theatre Performance Skills 1 and 2, while also participating in large ensemble training and selecting supporting units like Music Language Foundations or Popular Music in Global Perspective. These early studies focus on essential performance techniques in singing, acting, and dancing, alongside basic music theory and historical context. In Level 2, students advance to more specialised training through units such as Music in Action and Music Theatre: Exploring Characterisation, along with Music Theatre Performance Skills 3, which deepen their interpretative and stage performance abilities. In Level 3, the curriculum becomes highly professional and industry-focused, including units like Professional Skills: Music Industry and Artist and advanced Music Theatre Performance Skills 4 and 5, alongside continued ensemble participation. This stage prepares students for real-world careers by developing audition techniques, stage professionalism, and industry awareness. Overall, the program combines practical performance training, academic study, and ensemble experience to prepare graduates for careers in musical theatre, live performance, and the broader creative arts industry.
