COURSE CURRICULUM

The Music General Studies major is structured across three levels, combining practical performance, ensemble participation, and theoretical musical study. At Level 1, students complete core units including Music Large Ensemble 1 and 2, which provide ensemble experience, along with Practical Studies A and B, which focus on developing individual performance or composition skills through guided instruction. At Level 2, students continue ensemble participation through Music Large Ensemble 3 and further refine their practical skills in Practical Studies C. They also study Music and Practices of Listening and Music in Action, which explore how music is understood, performed, and applied in different contexts. At Level 3, students complete Music Large Ensemble 4 and Practical Studies D, continuing advanced performance development. In addition, they choose electives such as Music in the Sixties, Music in Film, TV and Video Games, Music, Society, and Ideas, or Conducting, allowing them to explore specialised areas of musical interest. Across all levels, the course balances hands-on performance with academic study, encouraging both artistic and intellectual growth. Overall, the major supports students in developing strong musicianship, critical listening skills, and creative expression while providing flexibility to combine music with other academic disciplines and prepare for diverse career pathways in the arts and beyond.
