COURSE CURRICULUM

The Electronic Music and Sound Design course is structured across three levels to progressively develop students’ creative, technical, and professional skills in electronic music production and sound art. In Level 1, students complete core introductory units including MUSC1054 Music Theory for Electronic Musicians (6 points), which builds foundational understanding of musical structure for digital composition, MUSC1055 Electronic Music: Methods and Means (6 points), which introduces key tools and techniques in electronic music creation, and MUSC1350 Popular Music in Global Perspective (6 points), which explores the cultural and historical context of popular music worldwide. In Level 2, students advance to more specialised study through MUSC2273 Electronic Music: Generative Processes (6 points), MUSC2274 Electronic Music: Sampling and Synthesis (6 points), MUSC2276 Sound, Image and Space (6 points), and MUSC2277 Electronic Music: Interactive Systems (6 points), focusing on advanced sound creation, digital synthesis, and interactive audio systems. In Level 3, students complete MUSC3571 Sound Art: Advanced Studio (6 points) and MUSC3572 Sound Art: Major Project (12 points), which allows them to develop a substantial independent creative work such as an album, installation, performance, or multimedia project. This structure ensures students build both artistic vision and technical expertise for careers in music production and sound design.
