COURSE CURRICULUM

The Law and Society major is structured across three levels, combining core and elective units that build understanding of law in social contexts. At Level 1, students complete two core units: Crime and Society and Law in Context, which introduce foundational ideas about how law operates within society. At Level 2, students take the core unit Law in Action, along with a selection of electives such as Birth, Life and Death: Health and Medical Law, Criminal Justice Systems, Human Rights: Law and Context, and Indigenous Peoples and the Law, allowing exploration of specialised legal themes. At Level 3, students complete advanced core units including Law and Social Change and Law and Power, which focus on the relationship between law, authority, and societal transformation. They also choose from electives such as International Law and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), Creative Expression and the Law, Social Media and the Law, and Crime, Justice and Public Policy, enabling deeper engagement with contemporary legal issues. The program also includes rules for students combining this major with Criminology, limiting shared units to ensure academic breadth, particularly restricting overlap at different levels. Overall, the structure progressively develops students’ knowledge from foundational concepts to advanced critical analysis of law’s role in shaping society.
