COURSE CURRICULUM

The Japanese major is structured across three levels, gradually developing students’ language proficiency and understanding of Japanese society and culture. At Level 1, students complete foundational language units, JAPN1401 Japanese 1 and JAPN1402 Japanese 2, which introduce essential vocabulary, grammar, pronunciation, and communication skills in reading, writing, listening, and speaking. These units help students build confidence in everyday Japanese communication while gaining familiarity with cultural practices and social customs. At Level 2, students continue advancing their language abilities through JAPN2001 Japanese 3A, JAPN2403 Japanese 3, and JAPN2404 Japanese 4. These units focus on more complex grammar structures, conversational fluency, comprehension, and written expression, allowing students to interact more effectively in academic and practical situations. At Level 3, students achieve advanced language proficiency and deeper cultural understanding through JAPN3405 Japanese 5 and JAPN3406 Japanese 6, which strengthen communication skills in sophisticated and professional contexts. Students also complete ASIA3002 Issues in Japanese Society and Culture, a unit that examines contemporary social, cultural, and political issues in Japan. Together, the course structure combines intensive language learning with critical study of Japanese society, preparing students for global careers and intercultural engagement in the Asia-Pacific region.
