COURSE CURRICULUM

The Indonesian Studies major is structured across three progressive levels, designed to develop strong language proficiency alongside a deep understanding of Indonesian society and culture. At Level 1, students complete Indonesian 1 and Indonesian 2, which establish foundational skills in speaking, reading, writing, and listening, allowing beginners to build confidence in basic communication. At Level 2, students continue language development through Indonesian 3A, Indonesian 3, and Indonesian 4, which strengthen fluency and introduce more complex grammatical structures and communicative contexts. At Level 3, students undertake Indonesian 5 and Indonesian 6, alongside Indonesian Politics and Culture, which explores contemporary political systems, cultural diversity, and social dynamics within Indonesia. In addition to core language and cultural studies, students may undertake optional in-country or field study units such as Indonesian In-country 5, Indonesian Field Study, and Indonesian In-country 6, providing immersive learning experiences that enhance language acquisition and cultural understanding through real-world engagement. Across all levels, the course integrates language learning with cultural, political, and social analysis. Overall, the major prepares students for advanced communication skills and intercultural competence, supporting career pathways in international relations, diplomacy, education, tourism, business, and roles requiring strong engagement with Indonesia and the broader Southeast Asian region.
