COURSE CURRICULUM

The course structure for this Art History major is designed to progressively develop students’ understanding of art history, curatorial practice, and visual culture through a combination of foundational and specialised study. In Level 1, students complete core introductory units including HART1000 Ways of Making: From Pigments to Plastic in the History of Art (6 points), which explores artistic materials and techniques across history, and HART1003 Ways of Seeing: Themes and Theories in Art (6 points), which introduces key concepts and critical approaches in art history. In Level 2, students select 18 points from a wide range of specialised units covering topics such as curating First Nations art, digital approaches to curation, photography, Japanese art, Chinese contemporary art, global modernisms, museum studies, Renaissance and Baroque art, and urban artistic experience. These units allow students to explore diverse artistic traditions and cultural perspectives while developing analytical and curatorial skills. In Level 3, students undertake advanced study by completing 18 points from options including professional curation, art writing, portraiture, Australian and Aboriginal art, internet art, Renaissance studies, and decolonising art history. Advanced units also focus on exhibition practices, object analysis, and global art histories. This structure combines historical knowledge, visual analysis, and professional communication skills, preparing students for careers in galleries, museums, curatorial practice, arts administration, and cultural institutions.
