COURSE CURRICULUM

The Gender Studies major is structured across three levels, combining core theoretical learning with interdisciplinary elective options that explore gender, identity, and social justice. At Level 1, students complete the core unit Beyond ‘Gender Wars’ along with an elective chosen from areas such as literature, art history, Indigenous studies, women’s health, music, or cultural studies, providing a broad introduction to how gender is represented and experienced across different fields. At Level 2, students study either Masculinity, Nostalgia and Change or Sex, Gender, Technology and Science as a core unit, and select additional electives from disciplines including anthropology, history, biomedical science, English, and Indigenous studies, allowing deeper exploration of gender in social, cultural, and scientific contexts. At Level 3, students complete the core unit Feminist Thought, which provides advanced theoretical grounding in gender analysis. They also choose electives from a wide range of subjects such as Queer Theory, Gender and Power in Asia, Gender and the Law, Politics of Gender, Managing Diversity, Gender and Health Research, Social Movements and Change, and Human Evolutionary Ecology. Overall, the course integrates perspectives from multiple disciplines to examine gender in historical and contemporary contexts, while developing critical thinking, communication, and advocacy skills for careers in social policy, research, education, and community development.
