COURSE CURRICULUM

The French course is structured across three progressive levels designed to develop students’ language proficiency alongside a deep understanding of French and francophone culture, literature, and society. Students may enter the program at beginner, intermediate, or advanced level depending on their prior knowledge of the language. In Level 1, beginners complete core language foundation units including FREN1401 French Beginners 1 (6 points) and FREN1402 French Beginners 2 (6 points), which introduce essential grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation, and communication skills. In Level 2, students advance their language abilities and cultural knowledge through FREN2001 Literary France (6 points), which explores French literature and cultural identity, as well as FREN2403 French Studies 3 (6 points) and FREN2404 French Studies 4 (6 points), which strengthen speaking, reading, writing, and analytical skills. In Level 3, students complete advanced language and cultural study through FREN3405 French Studies 5 (6 points) and FREN3406 French Studies 6 (6 points), focusing on sophisticated communication and critical interpretation. Students also choose an elective worth 6 points, such as FREN3813 Contemporary French Culture (6 points), which examines modern French society and media, or FREN3814 Francophone Caribbean Literature (6 points), focusing on literary traditions and postcolonial perspectives. Optional substitute units such as FREN2300 or FREN3300 Language and Culture in French Polynesia (6 points) may also be taken to broaden cultural understanding.
