COURSE CURRICULUM

The Criminology major is structured across three levels and focuses on understanding crime, justice systems, and the social and legal responses to criminal behaviour. At Level 1, students begin with foundational study through Crime and Society, which introduces key concepts in criminology, along with an option such as Law in Context or Psychology: Behaviour in Context to build interdisciplinary understanding. At Level 2, students advance to core units including Criminal Justice Systems and Working with People in the Justice System I, which explore how justice systems operate and how professionals engage with individuals within those systems. Students also select from electives such as Australian Underbelly: A Criminal History, American Outlaws: Crime and Punishment in the United States, Transnational and Organised Crime, and Indigenous Peoples and the Law, allowing them to explore specialised areas of interest. At Level 3, students choose from advanced options including Crime, Justice and Public Policy and Emerging Trends in Crime and Criminology, or broader electives such as Crime and Punishment in Britain, Preventing Contemporary Crime Problems, and Law and Social Change. Across all levels, the course develops critical thinking, analytical, and research skills, preparing graduates for careers in criminal justice, law enforcement, policy development, social work, and related fields addressing crime and justice issues.
