COURSE CURRICULUM

The Classical Studies course is structured across three levels to provide students with a strong foundation in ancient Greek and Roman history, languages, literature, and culture, while also allowing for advanced specialised study. In Level 1, students choose 12 points of study from introductory units such as CLAN1001 Myths of the Greeks and Romans: Story, History and Reinvention (6 points), CLAN1002 Glory and Grandeur: An Introduction to the Ancient World (6 points), as well as beginner language units including CLAN1101 Latin 1 (6 points) or CLAN1201 Greek 1: An Introduction to Ancient Greek (6 points), with at least one language unit required. In Level 2, students complete 12 points from options including CLAN2001 The Golden Age of Athens (6 points), CLAN2002 Power and Politics in the Roman Empire: 44 BC–AD 68 (6 points), and intermediate language units such as Latin 2 and 3 or Greek 2. In Level 3, students undertake 24 points of advanced study, selecting from specialised topics such as Alexander the Great, Roman Britain, the Roman Revolution, religion and society in the ancient world, gender and identity in Greece and Rome, and the reception of classical culture after antiquity. Advanced language units in Latin and Greek are also available. This structure develops linguistic skills, historical understanding, and critical analysis of ancient civilisations and their lasting influence.
