COURSE CURRICULUM

The Asian Studies course is structured across three levels to provide students with a broad and critical understanding of Asian societies, cultures, histories, and political systems. In Level 1, students complete core introductory units including ASIA1001 Asian Societies and Cultures (6 points), which explores the diversity of cultures and social structures across Asia, and ASIA1002 Asia from Colonial to Modern (6 points), which examines the historical transformations of Asian societies from the colonial period to the modern era. In Level 2, students select units worth 12 points from a range of interdisciplinary options such as ASIA2001 Culture, Society and the State in Asia (6 points), focusing on the relationship between political systems and society, ASIA2002 Australia and Asia (6 points), which explores regional connections and interactions, and ASIA2004 Popular Culture in Asia (6 points), which examines media, entertainment, and contemporary cultural trends. In Level 3, students complete 24 points of advanced specialised study by choosing from units including ASIA3001 Indonesian Politics and Culture (6 points), ASIA3002 Issues in Japanese Society and Culture (6 points), ASIA3003 Social Issues in Contemporary China (6 points), ASIA3004 Gender and Power in Asia (6 points), ASIA3005 Autocracy and Democracy in Asia (6 points), and ASIA3006 Contemporary Korean Society (6 points). This structure enables students to develop strong analytical, cultural, and regional expertise in contemporary Asian studies.
