COURSE CURRICULUM

The Archaeology major in the Bachelor of Arts is structured across three progressive levels, combining theoretical knowledge with practical field and laboratory experience. At Level 1, students complete foundational units including Great Discoveries in Archaeology and Experimenting with Archaeology, which introduce key archaeological concepts, methods, and the scientific study of human history through material remains. At Level 2, students build deeper subject knowledge through core units such as Human Origins and Rock Art, Archaeology of Death, Conspiracies, Aliens and Hoaxes, and Archaeology: Fieldschool, which provide both critical thinking skills and hands-on field experience. These units explore human evolution, cultural practices, and archaeological interpretation while developing practical excavation and recording techniques. At Level 3, students undertake advanced study through Archaeological Science, 65,000 Years of Archaeology in Australasia, Maritime and Historical Archaeology, and Advanced Archaeology Research Skills. These units focus on specialised methods, regional archaeological histories, underwater and historical archaeology, and advanced research training. Across all levels, the course integrates scientific analysis, fieldwork, and cultural interpretation to help students understand human history over millions of years. Overall, the program prepares graduates for careers in archaeology, heritage management, cultural resource protection, research, and international fieldwork opportunities.
