COURSE CURRICULUM

The Anthropology major is structured across three levels and focuses on understanding human societies, cultures, and global challenges. At Level 1, students complete core introductory units including Being Human: Culture, Identity and Society and Disasters!, which provide foundational knowledge of cultural diversity, social organisation, and human responses to environmental and social crises. At Level 2, students build on these foundations through core units such as Human Futures: Energy, Food and Sustainable Environments, Society, Law and Politics, and Entangled Objects. These subjects explore key anthropological themes including sustainability, governance, material culture, and the relationships between people, objects, and environments. At Level 3, students undertake advanced study through Ethnography, Engaged Practices, and Indigenous Australia. These units focus on research methods, applied anthropology, community engagement, and Indigenous perspectives within Australia. Across all levels, the course emphasises critical thinking, cultural analysis, and an understanding of global and local social issues. Students develop skills in research, fieldwork, and qualitative analysis, enabling them to interpret complex social systems. Overall, the major prepares graduates for careers in social research, community development, cultural heritage, public policy, international development, and other fields that require strong intercultural understanding and analytical abilities in addressing contemporary social challenges.
