ABOUT UNIVERSITY

The University of Western Australia (UWA) is a prestigious public research university located in the Australian state of Western Australia. Its main campus is situated in Crawley, a riverside suburb in the City of Perth. Established in 1911 by an act of the Parliament of Western Australia, UWA is the oldest university in the state and the sixth-oldest in the country. It is part of the Group of Eight, a coalition of Australia's leading research-intensive universities, and is also classified among the “sandstone universities,” a term used to describe the oldest university in each Australian state.UWA first opened its doors to students in 1913 at a temporary campus on Irwin Street in central Perth. The current campus in Crawley became the university's permanent home in 1932. The institution owes much of its early development to its founding chancellor, John Winthrop Hackett, whose significant bequest funded the construction of major buildings and established scholarships to support students from all backgrounds. Key landmarks such as Winthrop Hall and Hackett Hall are named in his honor.Over time, UWA expanded both academically and physically. The university introduced the Doctorate of Philosophy degree in 1946, awarding its first PhD in 1950. In 2013, it launched a Bachelor of Philosophy program aimed at high-achieving students. Architectural contributions to the campus include Winthrop Hall, designed by Rodney Alsop, which earned him a bronze medal from the Royal Institute of British Architects in 1932. A historic building from the original Irwin Street campus still survives today, preserved as a heritage site and relocated within the Crawley campus.Today, UWA continues to be a leading center of academic excellence and innovation, offering a wide range of undergraduate and postgraduate programs, and maintaining strong global research partnerships.
