COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Science (Extension) is a comprehensive and advanced postgraduate degree that blends high-level scientific skills development with professional growth, research opportunities and a choice of six industry-aligned majors that reflect global priorities in scientific innovation. This program includes an additional 24 credit points of electives beyond the standard Master of Science, enabling students to broaden or customise their learning to meet career objectives while completing the course in two years of full-time study. Throughout the program, students undertake core subjects such as Advanced Communication Skills in Science and Understanding Data and Statistical Design, establishing essential capabilities in research design, scientific literacy and data interpretation. Learning is delivered through a combination of coursework, hands-on projects and research under the guidance of leading scientists and mathematicians, supported by access to state-of-the-art laboratories and collaborative industry partnerships. Students benefit from flexible study options that make it possible to balance professional, academic and personal commitments. A distinctive feature of the program is the opportunity for eligible students who achieve a credit average in their first year to apply for transfer to the Master of Philosophy in Science, providing a pathway to the UTS PhD program. With majors available across disciplines such as Analytical Chemical Technologies, Environmental Consultancy and Conservation, Mathematical and Statistical Data Science, Advanced Studies, Biomedical Engineering and Medical Laboratory Science, students develop deep expertise and practical proficiency tailored to their aspirations. Each major offers advanced theoretical knowledge and real-world experience through laboratory work, research engagement and industry-focused learning relevant to fields including diagnostics, ecology, data science, medical technologies and analytical chemistry.
