COURSE CURRICULUM
In the Master of Orthoptics program, you will study the diagnosis and management of a wide range of eye disorders affecting both children and adults, gaining a comprehensive understanding of vision function and dysfunction. The course provides a solid grounding in the anatomy and physiology of the eye, ophthalmics, diagnostics and therapeutics, as well as the principles and practice of clinical orthoptics. Guided by internationally recognised academic researchers and experienced practitioners, you will learn to assess and treat conditions related to binocular vision, ocular motility, neurological visual disorders and refractive errors. The program combines theoretical coursework with structured practical training, ensuring that you develop the knowledge and clinical reasoning required to provide safe and effective patient care. A key feature of the degree is the extensive clinical placement experience, which takes place across a variety of professional environments, including public and private hospitals, private eye clinics and rehabilitation centres. These placements allow you to work directly with patients, apply diagnostic techniques, develop communication and teamwork skills, and gain exposure to diverse clinical settings and patient needs. There are also opportunities for interstate, regional or international clinical placements, enabling students to broaden their professional perspectives and experience eye health services in different healthcare systems. Throughout the program, you will build confidence in examining visual function, managing complex visual conditions and preparing personalised treatment plans. Academic learning is supported by research training through dedicated research project subjects, developing skills that contribute to evidence-based clinical practice. By the completion of your studies, you will have the professional skills, clinical competence and theoretical foundation needed to apply for registration and begin your career as a qualified orthoptist. This program is designed to prepare graduates to meet industry expectations and address the growing demand for eye health professionals in Australia and beyond.
