COURSE CURRICULUM
In the Master of Medical Biotechnology (Extension), you’ll study a combination of core scientific subjects and professional development units that strengthen both your technical proficiency and your leadership capabilities as a biotechnology professional. The core subjects are relevant to all science disciplines and provide the essential backbone of skills required for success in modern biotechnology environments, including scientific communication, data analysis, critical thinking, project management and innovation and commercialisation. These subjects are complemented by specialist Medical Biotechnology studies, where you’ll explore advanced laboratory techniques and emerging technologies across areas such as proteomics, infectious disease diagnostics, medical microbiology, bionanotechnology and microscopy. You’ll also have the opportunity to tailor your learning journey through professional stream electives that allow you to design a personalised portfolio aligned with your career aspirations across research, industry, science business or government. Throughout your degree, you’ll gain hands-on experience applying biotechnology principles to complex problems, learning to design research trials, interpret scientific evidence and communicate technical findings to diverse stakeholders. You may also undertake a small research project, subject to faculty approval, giving you the chance to work on real-world biotechnology challenges. High-achieving students can apply to undertake a more substantial research project through a transfer into the Master of Philosophy in Medical Biotechnology, which offers a direct route to the UTS PhD program and supports progression into advanced research careers. A key strength of this program is the integration of world-class facilities and industry-informed teaching, allowing you to build technical capability alongside professional readiness. Graduates emerge equipped to engage in cutting-edge biotechnology discovery and innovation, prepared for careers across medical and health sectors, research organisations, pharmaceutical companies, and biotechnology enterprises.
