COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Forensic Science (Extension) is designed to prepare students for leadership roles within the forensic science profession, offering an educational experience driven by real-world industry priorities and global forensic standards. Throughout the course, you will complete two core forensic science subjects that build the advanced practical, interpretive and investigative skills essential for working with forensic traces in professional environments. Beyond these core foundations, you will have the flexibility to tailor your degree by selecting specialist subjects aligned with your interests, such as forensic toxicology and recreational drug analysis, biometrics and identification sciences, chemical criminalistics, and more. The program also incorporates professional subjects common to UTS postgraduate science degrees, including Advanced Communication Skills in Science and Understanding Data and Statistical Design, which strengthen your professional capability through communication, data handling and scientific reasoning skills applicable in diverse organisational contexts. As an extension degree, this program includes an additional 24 credit points of elective subjects, enabling you to broaden your expertise, explore complementary areas such as analytical chemical technologies or medical science, or undertake research experience. Hands-on learning is central to the course, supported by world-class simulation environments such as the renowned Crime Scene Simulation Laboratories and specialist forensic laboratories equipped with industry-standard technologies. Students also have the opportunity to engage in a research internship working on real-world forensic challenges with leading academic and professional organisations, including access to unique facilities such as the Australian Facility for Taphonomic Experimental Research. This course provides a strong pathway to research, with high-performing students eligible to apply for transfer into the Master of Philosophy in Forensic Science. Overall, the program develops highly skilled, adaptable forensic practitioners prepared for advanced roles across forensic science, criminal justice and scientific research environments.
