The UTS Bachelor of Molecular Biotechnology equips students with the knowledge and practical skills required to address critical challenges in medicine, industry, and the environment. Students have the choice of majoring in either Environmental Biotechnology or Medical Biotechnology. In the Environmental Biotechnology major, students explore topics such as pollution mitigation, environmental remediation, and renewable energy technologies, developing the expertise needed to create sustainable solutions for global ecological challenges. The Medical Biotechnology major focuses on molecular biology, microbiology, human genetics, and related biomedical disciplines, preparing students for careers in healthcare, pharmaceuticals, and biomedical research.Students build specialised knowledge through core major subjects, gaining hands-on experience with techniques such as bioreactors and bioprocessing, molecular analysis, and microbiological and biochemical methods. The degree emphasizes practical learning, with opportunities to undertake internships for academic credit, allowing students to apply their skills in professional environments and develop workplace-ready experience. Elective units provide flexibility to broaden learning beyond biotechnology, with options across disciplines such as arts, business, and law, supporting well-rounded professional development and collaborative capabilities.The program is structured over three years of full-time study, beginning with foundational science subjects in chemistry, cell biology, molecular biology, and biochemistry. In the second year, students begin their core biotechnology subjects while specialising in their chosen major. In the third year, students complete their remaining major subjects, consolidate practical and theoretical learning, and expand their skills through electives and a transdisciplinary subject that promotes teamwork and innovation.High-performing students can progress to the Bachelor of Science (Honours) by completing an additional research year, allowing them to undertake an advanced project in biotechnology. Graduates emerge with expertise in cutting-edge techniques, analytical skills, and professional experience, fully prepared for careers in biotechnology, biomedical research, environmental science, and related industries, or to continue into postgraduate research. This degree combines rigorous scientific training with applied experience to produce graduates capable of advancing innovation and addressing pressing global challenges.
