COURSE CURRICULUM

In this Civil Engineering program at UTS, you’ll explore a wide range of analytical and practical skills that underpin the work of a professional civil engineer. Your studies will involve the use of calculus, trigonometry and vectors to understand the behaviour of loads, forces and materials, while laboratory experiments, field tests and computer simulations give you the opportunity to apply these concepts to real engineering problems. The major is delivered in three progressive stages. The first stage focuses on the fundamentals of civil engineering, introducing you to core concepts in mathematics, modelling and engineering principles. The second stage emphasises the application of civil engineering practices, where you begin to design, analyse and troubleshoot using industry techniques and software tools. In the final stage, you will concentrate on the professional application of civil engineering practice, preparing you to manage and oversee project success by integrating technical knowledge with project management, communication and collaborative skills. You will also have the chance to specialise through a range of sub-majors, allowing you to tailor your degree to areas that interest you most. These include construction, structures, extended civil engineering, geotechnical engineering, transport engineering and water resources engineering. Each specialisation helps you build deeper expertise in the systems, materials and processes that shape the built environment. Alongside your major subjects, you will complete important core subjects such as Physical Modelling, Mathematics 1 and 2, Introduction to Engineering Projects, Engineering Project Appraisal, Designing Sustainable Engineering Projects, Professional Engineering Communication, Collaboration in Complex Projects, Professional Practice Preparation 1 and the Professional Experience Review. Together, these subjects provide a comprehensive learning experience that equips you with strong technical foundations, practical abilities and the professional readiness required to thrive in the civil engineering profession.
