COURSE CURRICULUM
In this Civil Structures major at UTS, you will study the key analytical and design principles that underpin modern structural engineering. The course focuses on developing your ability to understand and predict how structures behave under various stresses, loads and movements caused by environmental impacts. This includes learning how weather, wind, rain, heat and long-term climate change influence the performance and lifespan of structures, as well as how extreme events such as earthquakes or explosions can affect stability and safety. Through this knowledge, you will gain the fundamental skills needed to design structures that are resilient, efficient and suitable for a wide range of real-world conditions. A major component of the program is learning to assess structural damage, a critical skill for working with both new and ageing infrastructure. You will work with advanced computer software used in industry to model, analyse and design structures, allowing you to simulate loads, evaluate stress distribution and identify points of potential failure. This practical training equips you with the ability to assess older structures that may now be exposed to loads or conditions they were not originally designed to withstand. You will learn how to propose effective strengthening and repair solutions, ensuring the safety, durability and regulatory compliance of existing buildings and civil assets. Alongside these specialised subjects, you will undertake a series of core engineering units that build your foundations in mathematics, physical modelling, engineering communication, project appraisal, sustainability and collaborative practice. These subjects support your professional development and prepare you for work in multidisciplinary engineering environments. The course offers a strong balance of theoretical understanding and hands-on technical experience, enabling you to graduate with the advanced skills required to succeed in the structural engineering field.
