COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Design in Visual Communication at UTS is a 144-credit-point degree structured to build strong foundations in communication design while allowing space for exploration and specialisation. The course consists of 108 credit points of core subjects, which form the central component of the program and develop essential skills in visual communication practice, design thinking, digital media, and contemporary studio-based learning. These core subjects focus on key areas such as typography, image-making, interaction design, visual culture, and communication strategies, ensuring students gain a comprehensive understanding of both traditional and emerging design practices. In addition, students complete 24 credit points of Design Studies, which provide deeper theoretical and contextual knowledge of design history, research methods, and critical approaches to visual communication, helping students understand the cultural and social impact of design. The final 12 credit points are allocated to electives, allowing students to broaden their learning or pursue specific areas of interest within or beyond the design discipline. This flexible structure supports both creative development and academic depth, enabling students to refine their individual design voice while building practical and conceptual skills. Overall, the program prepares graduates with a balanced combination of technical expertise, critical thinking, and creative problem-solving abilities for careers in the global design and communication industries.
