COURSE CURRICULUM
The Bachelor of Communication in Journalism/Bachelor of Laws at UTS is a 240 credit point dual degree that awards two separate qualifications by integrating journalism studies with a comprehensive legal education. The Law component comprises 144 credit points, including 108 credit points of compulsory core law subjects that provide a strong foundation in legal principles and meet the academic requirements for admission to legal practice in New South Wales. Students also complete 30 credit points of law options, which may be taken either as general law electives or through the Legal Futures and Technology pathway, which focuses on emerging developments in legal practice and digital transformation. In addition, a 6 credit-point legal theory subject develops deeper understanding of jurisprudence and legal reasoning. The Communication (Journalism) component consists of 96 credit points and includes 18 credit points of Communication Core subjects that establish foundational communication skills, 48 credit points of Journalism Stream subjects focused on news reporting, investigative journalism, multimedia storytelling, and media practice, and 30 credit points of electives that allow students to broaden their academic and professional interests. This structured program ensures graduates develop strong expertise in both journalism and law, equipping them with the skills to work across media, legal, policy, and communication sectors. The degree prepares students for interdisciplinary careers where legal knowledge and advanced journalism skills are increasingly valuable in a rapidly evolving global media environment.
