COURSE CURRICULUM
The UTS Bachelor of Communication with a Journalism stream provides students with the knowledge, skills, and professional capabilities needed to pursue a career in contemporary journalism. Students begin by completing core Communication subjects such as Communication and Society, Communication and Technology, and Communication and Work Futures. These foundational units equip students with an understanding of how media interacts with society, the impact of technological change on communication, and the evolving nature of work in media and communication industries. Together, these subjects lay the groundwork for more specialised study while fostering critical thinking, creativity, and professional awareness.In the Journalism stream, students develop expertise in reporting, media law and ethics, multimedia storytelling, and investigative techniques. Core journalism subjects include Media Law and Ethics, News Now, Multimedia Features, Sound Journalism, Visual Journalism, Digital Journalism Research, and Investigations, Data and Collaboration. Through these courses, students learn to research, analyse, and report news accurately, ethically, and effectively across a range of platforms, from traditional print and broadcast to digital and social media. They also gain experience in using data-driven approaches and collaborative investigative methods to produce compelling and reliable journalism.Students consolidate their skills in the Professional Project, which provides a practical, hands-on opportunity to produce professional-quality journalistic work. Additionally, they can broaden their expertise through Communication electives or a second stream, enhancing their versatility and employability.Overall, this degree equips students to navigate the fast-changing media landscape, balancing technical skills, ethical awareness, and creative storytelling. Graduates are prepared for diverse roles in newsrooms, digital media organisations, broadcasting, and investigative reporting, leaving ready to contribute meaningfully to public discourse and the media industry at large.
