COURSE CURRICULUM
The Pharmaceutical Sciences major provides students with a comprehensive foundation in essential scientific disciplines, including genetics, human anatomy, physiology, medicinal chemistry and pharmacology, ensuring a strong understanding of how medicines are discovered, developed and used in healthcare. The degree offers flexibility through three sub-majors, allowing students to tailor their studies to their interests. The Biology sub-major expands knowledge in anatomy and introduces microbiology, offering insight into the structure and function of living systems. The Chemistry sub-major focuses on advanced analytical and organic chemistry, supporting students who want to deepen their understanding of chemical processes relevant to drug design. The general elective sub-major offers the freedom to select subjects from biological and chemical fields, allowing for a broader academic experience. All students also complete an Indigenous Health subject to build awareness of culturally safe healthcare practices and take a Transdisciplinary elective designed to strengthen collaboration and problem-solving skills. Throughout the course, students progressively build expertise, beginning in the first year with foundational studies in chemistry, cell biology and data analysis while gaining an introduction to key pharmaceutical science concepts. In the second year, the program becomes more specialised through subjects in metabolic biochemistry, pharmacology, cosmetics and immunology, alongside continued focus on the chosen sub-major. The Transdisciplinary elective during this year provides practical experience working with a multidisciplinary team, enhancing teamwork and communication skills. In the final year, students complete advanced core subjects that develop career-ready knowledge in areas such as Indigenous wellbeing, medicinal chemistry and human health, preparing graduates for postgraduate study in pharmacy or diverse roles within the pharmaceutical sector. By the end of the degree, students are equipped with scientific expertise, practical experience and interdisciplinary skills that support a wide range of professional pathways across research, healthcare and the broader pharmaceutical industry.
