COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Urbanism (Heritage Conservation) provides a comprehensive and interdisciplinary education that combines urbanism, planning, design, and heritage conservation to prepare graduates for the challenges of preserving culturally significant places in contemporary cities. The program begins with core units that provide a strong foundation in urbanism while developing an understanding of the history, theory, and interrelationship of urban and regional planning, urban design, and heritage conservation. Through the Heritage Conservation specialisation, students gain advanced knowledge and practical skills in the assessment, interpretation, management, documentation, and policy development of heritage places, including historic buildings, archaeological sites, cultural landscapes, and places of social significance. The curriculum explores both traditional conservation approaches and contemporary challenges, including the adaptation and reuse of heritage assets within evolving urban environments. Students learn how to design sensitive additions, alterations, and adaptive reuse projects for buildings of recognised heritage value while understanding the conservation of modern materials and construction techniques. A wide range of elective opportunities allows students to broaden or deepen their expertise in related areas, and domestic students may undertake international field studio placements that provide valuable global perspectives on conservation practice. By combining theoretical knowledge, technical skills, and practical experience, the program prepares graduates for professional roles in heritage conservation, urban planning, policymaking, cultural resource management, and the broader built environment sector.
