COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Building Performance and Sustainable Design is structured to develop advanced expertise in designing environmentally responsible and high-performing buildings across their full lifecycle. In the first year, students build foundational knowledge through core subjects such as sustainable design principles, building technology fundamentals, and designing with culture, which together establish an understanding of how environmental, technical, and social factors shape the built environment. They also study indoor environments, building performance, and data science applications, equipping them with analytical skills to assess energy efficiency, comfort, and sustainability outcomes. Elective units provide opportunities to explore specialised interests within the field. In the second year, the focus shifts toward applied and systems-level thinking, with subjects such as social sustainability and co-design, building lifecycles, and building systems, which deepen understanding of long-term environmental impact and integrated design solutions. The program culminates in an Integrated Design Capstone project, where students apply their learning to real-world sustainability challenges in collaborative, interdisciplinary settings. Throughout the course, emphasis is placed on innovation, collaboration, and evidence-based decision-making to support low-carbon and climate-resilient development. Graduates are prepared for professional roles in sustainable design, building performance consulting, and environmental planning, contributing to more efficient and sustainable built environments globally.
