COURSE CURRICULUM

The Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) is a structured four-year professional degree designed to prepare students for a career as a qualified veterinarian through a combination of foundational science, clinical training, and extensive practical experience. In Year 1, students build core knowledge in veterinary science through subjects such as Foundations of Veterinary Science, Professional Competency, Research and Enquiry, and Animal Management Systems, along with an initial industry placement in the horse industry. In Year 2, the focus shifts to understanding animal diseases and clinical foundations through units in Principles of Animal Disease, Professional Competency, Clinical Foundations, and continued research training, supported by dairy cattle industry placement and preparatory clinical placements. Year 3 introduces more advanced and species-specific veterinary practice, including small animal, livestock, equine, and wildlife medicine, veterinary public practice, and practice management, alongside research development and an abattoir placement to gain real-world experience in animal health and food safety. In Year 4, students transition into intensive clinical training through small and large animal clinics, laboratory investigations, and multiple extramural placements across different veterinary settings such as public, industry, and community environments. Overall, the program integrates scientific knowledge, clinical skills, and hands-on experience across diverse animal species and practice environments, preparing graduates to become competent, professional veterinarians capable of working in clinical practice, research, public health, and the animal health industry.
