COURSE CURRICULUM

The Doctor of Medicine (MD) is a postgraduate coursework degree designed to provide comprehensive clinical and research training for future doctors. It prepares students to become responsive to the health needs of individuals, families, and communities while also developing a commitment to improving healthcare systems at all levels. Upon completion, graduates are eligible for provisional registration with the Medical Board of Australia as medical practitioners. The four-year program follows a structured curriculum based on eight key vertical themes: basic and clinical sciences, clinical skills, diagnostics and therapy, research and evidence-based practice with informatics, population health, Indigenous health, ethics and law, and professionalism with interprofessional teamwork. These themes ensure students develop a well-rounded understanding of medicine that integrates scientific knowledge with clinical application and professional responsibility. Throughout the program, students complete a minimum of 2,310 hours of supervised professional placements in hospitals and community settings, allowing them to gain extensive hands-on clinical experience. In addition, they undertake a research project in their third year, which strengthens their ability to critically evaluate evidence and contribute to medical knowledge. By combining academic study, clinical training, and research, the MD equips graduates with the skills, judgment, and professionalism required for safe and effective medical practice. It prepares them for diverse careers in clinical medicine, healthcare leadership, research, and public health, with a strong focus on improving patient and community health outcomes.
