COURSE CURRICULUM

The Doctor of Clinical Dentistry (Special Needs Dentistry) is a three-year specialist training program designed to develop advanced clinical expertise, research capability, and professional competence in the dental care of patients with special needs. In Year 1, students begin with Special Needs Dentistry I and II, where they are introduced to the principles of managing patients with physical, intellectual, medical, sensory, cognitive, psychiatric, and emotional impairments. Alongside this, they undertake Research Methods in Dentistry and Dental Research Studies 1, building foundational skills in evidence-based practice and academic research. In Year 2, students progress to Special Needs Dentistry III and IV, where they gain more advanced clinical experience in diagnosing and managing complex cases requiring modified dental care approaches. Research development continues through Dental Research Studies 2 and 3, strengthening analytical and scholarly skills. In Year 3, students undertake Special Needs Dentistry V and VI, focusing on highly complex clinical management, multidisciplinary collaboration, and specialist-level decision-making for vulnerable patient groups. These are complemented by Dental Research Studies 4 and 5, which further enhance research expertise and academic contribution. Throughout the program, students integrate clinical practice, theory, and research to develop the skills required for specialist practice. Graduates are prepared for leadership roles in special needs dentistry, providing high-quality, compassionate, and accessible oral healthcare for patients with diverse and complex needs across a range of clinical settings.
