COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Nursing (Advanced Studies) at the University of Sydney is a structured 144-credit-point degree designed to develop highly skilled, evidence-based nursing professionals through a combination of core academic learning and extensive clinical experience. In the first year, students build foundational knowledge in human physiology, pathophysiology, nursing practice, population health, health equity, research, and introductory clinical areas such as perioperative and illness experience studies. These units establish a strong scientific and professional base for understanding health and disease. In the second year, students progress to more advanced topics including pharmacotherapeutics, acute care nursing, mental health, ageing and long-term care, patient safety, and health system design, alongside applied learning in clinical contexts. This stage deepens their ability to manage complex healthcare situations and patient needs. In the third year, the focus shifts to specialised nursing practice and professional readiness, with units covering critical care, community health, paediatrics, palliative care, Australian healthcare systems, frameworks for practice, First Nations health, and transition to professional nursing practice. Throughout the program, students also complete supervised clinical placements in diverse healthcare settings, gaining hands-on experience in real-world environments. Overall, the curriculum integrates theory, research, and practice to prepare graduates for registration as nurses and careers in diverse healthcare settings.
