COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Music (Performance) at the University of Sydney is a structured 192-credit-point program designed to develop professional musicians through a combination of practical training, theoretical study, and performance experience over four years. Students must complete core components including one-to-one principal study lessons, ensemble and performance work, music theory and aural skills, analysis and music history, industry and community projects, and elective units from the Open Learning Environment. In the first year, students build foundational skills through principal study performance units, introductory music theory and aural training, ensemble participation such as music theatre experience, and core studies in music culture and media. The second year continues skill development with higher-level principal study performance units, advanced theory, ensemble work, and historical studies in modern music and musical theatre. In the third year, students focus more intensively on extended performance units, popular music theory, and vocal or elective specialisation while refining artistic and technical abilities. The final year emphasizes advanced performance mastery through extended principal study units alongside electives such as music and wellbeing, Australian musical worlds, and a capstone-style music specialist project involving industry or community engagement. Overall, the curriculum is designed to progressively build performance excellence, academic understanding, and professional readiness for a career in music theatre and performance industries.
