COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Languages at the University of Sydney is a structured 144-credit-point degree designed to develop strong proficiency in one or more modern languages along with intercultural and global communication skills. The program includes three core units of study that introduce students to foundational concepts in language learning, cultural understanding, and communication. A central component of the degree is the completion of a 48-credit-point major in one selected modern language, chosen from a range of options including Arabic Language and Cultures, Chinese Studies, French and Francophone Studies, Germanic Studies, Hebrew (Modern), Indonesian Studies, Italian Studies, Japanese Studies, Korean Studies, Modern Greek Studies, or Spanish and Latin American Studies. Students also complete a 36-credit-point minor or a second major of 48 credit points from approved subject areas in Table A or Table S, allowing them to combine language study with another discipline. To ensure advanced language proficiency, students complete a total of 60 credit points in language-related units, with pathways tailored to their prior language experience. Additional elective units are taken as needed to reach the full 144-credit-point requirement. Overall, the degree provides both linguistic mastery and cultural competence, preparing graduates for careers in international communication, translation, education, diplomacy, and global industries.
