COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Applied Science (Speech Pathology) is a four-year undergraduate degree that prepares you for professional practice as a speech pathologist. This course provides you with the knowledge and clinical skills to assess and manage communication and swallowing difficulties across the lifespan. You will learn how to support children and adults with a range of needs, including speech and language delays, reading and writing challenges, stuttering, voice disorders, hearing loss, and swallowing difficulties (dysphagia). You will also explore the use of alternative and augmentative communication systems.The program includes core studies in speech science, neuroscience and behavioural science, alongside specialised speech pathology units. You will also complete elective units and, for eligible students, an integrated honours pathway is offered in the final three semesters, allowing you to undertake research and advanced study.Clinical training is a central part of the course and begins in your second year. You will complete approximately 889 hours of professional practice through placements in a range of settings, including hospitals, community health centres, disability services, schools, private practices, and not-for-profit organisations. Placements occur on campus and off site, and may take place in metropolitan, regional, interstate or even international locations, providing broad exposure to different client populations and service delivery models.This course is accredited by Speech Pathology Australia, the national professional body.
