COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Animal and Veterinary Bioscience equips students with both fundamental and applied knowledge in animal bioscience. This degree offers a broad overview of domestic animals and wildlife species, along with their environments, while providing integrated comparative knowledge in areas such as applied animal biotechnologies, reproduction, and nutrition. Students will gain detailed understanding of animal structure and function, with a strong focus on applying innovative technologies and approaches to improve animal management and welfare. To ensure disciplinary breadth, students choose from a prescribed list of cognate majors, which include Animal Health, Disease and Welfare; Animal Production; Biology; Ecology and Evolutionary Biology; Environmental Studies; Food Science; Genetics and Genomics; Indigenous Studies; Marine Science; Microbiology; and Sustainability.Throughout the degree, practical experience is emphasized through compulsory professional development placements with relevant animal or animal-related enterprises, including opportunities during university holidays. This hands-on experience is essential to prepare students for careers across veterinary, animal science, and related industries and is a mandatory part of the course requirements.Given the frequent contact with animals and the risk of exposure to zoonotic diseases, students enrolling in this course must meet vaccination requirements. Vaccination against Q fever (Coxiella burnetii) is mandatory due to the high-risk environments involved in learning activities. Students must complete the vaccination before commencing the course or within specified timelines depending on their enrolment semester. The Q fever vaccination process takes approximately three weeks and is only available in Australia. Additionally, students are responsible for ensuring their tetanus vaccinations are valid and up to date to maintain safety during practical activities. The course requires completion of 300 total work hours to fulfill professional practice requirements, ensuring graduates are job-ready and experienced upon entering the workforce.
