ABOUT UNIVERSITY

The University of Sydney (USYD), established in 1850, is Australia's oldest university and one of the world's earliest institutions to admit students solely on academic merit, regardless of gender. It is a public research university located in Sydney and is a member of the Group of Eight and other international academic networks. USYD comprises eight faculties offering a wide range of undergraduate and postgraduate programs. The university has produced prominent leaders, including Australian prime ministers and High Court justices, and is affiliated with Nobel and Crafoord laureates. Founded through efforts led by William Wentworth and Charles Nicholson, USYD became a secular institution that promoted educational access for all. Throughout its history, it has been a center for academic and social progress, including early admission of women and expansion through amalgamations in the 1990s. The Charles Perkins Centre was established for medical research, supported by significant donations.
