COURSE CURRICULUM
To graduate from the Bachelor of Surveying (Honours) at the University of Southern Queensland (UniSQ), students must complete 32 units of study that blend theoretical learning, technical expertise, and practical experience. The degree structure is designed to equip future surveyors with comprehensive knowledge across geospatial science, land development, and sustainable resource management while fostering professional readiness for diverse industry roles. The core courses, comprising 27 units, lay a strong foundation in surveying and spatial science. Students begin with introductory courses such as Foundations of Tertiary Study, Building Employability, and Introduction to Surveying, which establish essential academic and professional skills. Early courses like Introduction to Global Navigation Satellite Systems, Geospatial Mapping, and Fundamental Metrology for Surveyors introduce key technologies and measurement principles used in modern surveying. Students also develop critical skills in programming, mathematics, and urban planning through Foundation Programming, Engineering Mathematics, and Introduction to Urban and Regional Planning. As the program progresses, learners engage in more advanced and applied topics, including Applied Surveying and Computations, Photogrammetry and Drone Mapping, Mine Surveying, Construction Surveying, and Terrestrial Mapping. These courses emphasize the use of cutting-edge tools and techniques while reinforcing data accuracy, precision, and ethical practice. Practical learning is integral to the course, with several Work-Integrated Learning (WIL) components—Fundamental Surveying Practice and Applied Surveying Practices—offering real-world field experience.Students also gain insights into sustainability and spatial management through Sustainable Resource Use, Sustainable Urban Design and Development, and Property Valuation and Development. In their final year, they undertake a capstone Research Project and Research Practices in Surveying and Built Environment, applying their learning to real industry or research problems. The inclusion of courses such as Land and Cadastral Law, Practice Management for Spatial Scientists, and Spatial Data Manipulation and Integration ensures graduates are prepared for leadership roles and professional accreditation.
