COURSE CURRICULUM

To successfully complete the Bachelor of Science at the University of Southern Queensland, students must complete a total of 24 units of study. The degree is designed with a combination of core courses, a primary major, and selection units, ensuring a balance between foundational scientific knowledge and specialised learning.The core component comprises eight units that equip students with essential scientific, analytical, and professional skills. Core courses include SCI1001 – Succeeding in Science, which introduces students to the fundamentals of scientific study and professional practice, and STA1003 – Fundamental Statistics, which builds a strong foundation in data analysis. Students also study CSC1401 – Foundation Programming and MAT1100 – Foundation Mathematics, both of which provide the computational and mathematical skills required for scientific problem-solving. Advanced scientific inquiry and research methods are developed through STA2190 – Experimental Design and Analysis and SCI2201 – How Science Changes the World, which highlight the impact of scientific discovery on society. In the later stages of the degree, SCI3302 – Work-Integrated Learning offers hands-on experience in professional environments, and SCI3304 – Integrative Science Portfolio and Professional Identity helps students consolidate their learning, preparing them for career entry or postgraduate study.The Primary Major, consisting of eight units, allows students to specialise in a particular field of science such as biology, physics, computing, mathematics, or environmental science. This component provides in-depth knowledge and technical expertise aligned with each student’s career aspirations.Additionally, students complete eight selection units, which can be chosen to complement their major or broaden their knowledge across different scientific disciplines.Overall, the Bachelor of Science degree structure is flexible, practical, and industry-relevant, supporting students to develop as confident, adaptable professionals ready to apply scientific knowledge and research skills across a wide range of careers.
