COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Psychology (Honours) at the University of Southern Queensland requires the completion of 32 units, comprising 28 core units and 4 selection units. This degree provides students with a comprehensive foundation in psychology while developing advanced research, analytical, and professional practice skills essential for future psychologists. The program begins with introductory courses such as Foundation Psychology A and B, An Introduction to Cultural Safety in Practice, and Introduction to Professional Practice, which establish the core principles of psychological science, communication, and ethical awareness. Students also develop essential interpersonal and counselling skills through courses like Interpersonal Skills and Foundational Counselling Skills. As the program progresses, intermediate courses such as Social Processes of Behaviour, Motivation and Emotion, Developmental Psychology, and Human Information Processing build an understanding of the biological, cognitive, and social bases of behaviour. Research plays a central role in the curriculum, with Research Methods in Psychology A and B, Research Skills in Action, and Fundamental Statistics developing students’ ability to collect, analyse, and interpret psychological data. Applied learning continues through subjects like Abnormal Psychology, Counselling Psychology, Learning and Behaviour Change, Facilitation and Negotiation, and Beginning Psychotherapy, which equip students with the ability to assess, diagnose, and manage a range of psychological issues. Advanced topics such as Ethical and Professional Practice, Psychological Interventions, and Assessment and Interview Skills prepare students for real-world practice in diverse professional settings. The honours component, including the Psychology Honours Project and Advanced Research Approaches, allows students to conduct independent research under supervision, fostering critical inquiry and academic excellence. The remaining four selection units provide flexibility for students to tailor their studies to specific interests or career goals. Overall, this program integrates theory, practice, and research to produce graduates who are well-prepared for postgraduate psychology training, professional registration pathways, and roles in mental health, counselling, and behavioural sciences.
