COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Medical Laboratory Science at UniSQ is a 3.5-year degree designed to equip students with the knowledge and practical skills required for a career in medical laboratories. To graduate, students must complete 28 units, which include 27 core units and one recommended elective. The core curriculum provides a comprehensive foundation in human anatomy and physiology, chemistry, biochemistry, molecular diagnostics, microbiology, immunology, haematology, transfusion science, and anatomical pathology. Students also undertake extensive clinical placements across five units, gaining hands-on experience in pathology laboratories to prepare them for real-world professional practice. The program emphasizes both theoretical understanding and applied laboratory skills, ensuring students can analyse human samples for disease diagnosis, treatment, and prevention, including molecular and conventional techniques to identify infectious agents. Integrative courses, such as Integrative Pathology and Transition to Practice, ensure graduates are workforce-ready, capable of handling complex diagnostic tasks, and proficient in contemporary medical laboratory procedures. This degree has been developed in consultation with industry partners, including Pathology Queensland and the UniSQ Medical Laboratory Science Industry Advisory Panel, aligning content with current workforce needs. UniSQ is seeking accreditation from the Australian Institute of Medical and Clinical Scientists (AIMS), making this one of the shortest accredited programs of its kind in Australia and New Zealand. Graduates leave the program with the expertise to process patient tissue samples, perform advanced diagnostics, and contribute meaningfully to healthcare outcomes, bridging the gap between laboratory science theory and practical application.
