COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Geographic Information Science is a two-year, 32-unit postgraduate program that develops advanced expertise in geospatial technologies, spatial data analysis, and environmental decision-making. The curriculum begins with 8 units of Foundational Courses, including core studies in Applied Research Methods and Fundamentals of Geographic Information and Technologies, complemented by electives in information systems, mathematics, statistics, or data management to establish strong analytical and computing skills. Students then complete 10 to 12 units of Flexible Core Courses covering advanced topics such as Earth Observation Sciences, image processing and modelling, spatial analysis, geospatial processing, web mapping, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), and research-focused study. A compulsory 4-unit Research Project enables students to apply their technical knowledge to investigate real-world geospatial challenges, strengthening their research, problem-solving, project management, and scientific communication abilities. The remaining 8 to 10 units are selected from a broad range of Program Electives, including landscape ecology, climate change, environmental management, conservation planning, coastal and catchment management, urban planning, demography, data mining, database systems, industry placement, and academic writing. This flexible curriculum allows students to tailor their studies to their career interests while gaining advanced technical and research capabilities. Graduates are well prepared for professional roles in GIS, remote sensing, environmental consulting, urban planning, government agencies, natural resource management, research organisations, and the rapidly growing geospatial technology industry.
