COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Engineering Science (Management) in Software Engineering is a postgraduate program that integrates advanced software engineering knowledge with management, leadership, and research skills to prepare graduates for senior roles in the technology industry. The program is structured across 32 units, beginning with optional foundational courses (0 to 6 units) covering areas such as operating systems, artificial intelligence, cloud computing, software processes, networks, cybersecurity, and algorithms, depending on the student’s background. A core requirement of 4 units includes management communication and research methods, ensuring students develop strong professional and analytical capabilities. Students also complete 4 to 6 units of flexible compulsory courses in advanced topics such as program reasoning, concurrency, and information retrieval. The research component (2 to 8 units) allows students to undertake a supervised project or thesis in software engineering, developing independent problem-solving and research skills. Discipline electives (0 to 14 units) provide specialisation in areas such as machine learning, software architecture, natural language processing, data mining, web and mobile programming, cybersecurity, and human-computer interaction, while advanced electives further deepen expertise in algorithms and computational techniques. In addition, 6 to 12 units of management courses develop skills in entrepreneurship, innovation, sustainability, international business, marketing, and leadership. Overall, the program prepares graduates to design, develop, and manage complex software systems while also taking on leadership and strategic roles in global technology-driven organisations.
